How did this imaginary world of Belgian horses acting like people begin? It began with a laugh. Mary Ellen sketched a picture of a horse sleeping on a sofa with its mouth wide open. When her husband saw the picture he laughed. He worked hard during the day, and he often fell asleep and snored. During nearly 8 years of homeschooling their son Gabe (grades 3-11), Mary Ellen saw Belgian horses every time she looked out the window. It seemed only natural to her to draw the most familiar scene and animate these gentle giants. Growing up on a diet of When We Were Very Young (Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh) by A. A. Milne, and Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox in Joel Chandler Harris's Uncle Remus: The Complete Tales and Thornton Burgess's animal stories, Mary Ellen felt compelled to create a new fiction world with Belgian horses.
